We look forward to welcoming many RTFHS members and non-members alike at the RTFHS Society Day on Saturday 9 May 2015, from 10am until 4pm.

This year we’re in the heart of the New Forest, Hampshire: the ‘Nevi Wesh’, as our Romany ancestors called it. Our venue is The Forest Hall, Highwood Road, Brockenhurst, Hampshire SO42 7RY

Michael Gandy, the well-known genealogist and author, an early member of the RTFHS, will be joining us to talk about ‘Gypsies before civil registration’ and sharing his expertise on how to push back your family tree in the era before census returns and birth, marriage and death certificates.

And at 2.00pm, there will be a special performance of The Hither Side of the Hedge. This is an interpretation of the songs, dances and music collected from New Forest Gypsies by the writer and poet Alice Gillington (1863-1934) in the early 20th century.

There will be a presentation about the life of Alice herself, her poetry and the many Gypsy families she knew, plus photos. The performers will include Simon Harmer, Jo Harmer, Deb Lewis, Peter Ingram and the Jig Foot band and there will be opportunities for you to join in. Watch a taster online here.
