Exactly one hundred years ago in June 1921, the population of Britain was busy filling in their census forms, just as we did in March this year.

To mark the anniversary, RTFHS Committee Member Jeremy Harte has kindly provided us with a photo from his Surrey collection that shows a family of van dwellers with census form in hand. It dates from 20 June 1921 and the caption reads: “A caravan dweller at Battersea making his return, while his small daughters – and of course Matilda Ann, the doll! – watch the proceedings.”

We are also pleased to report that Find My Past’s release of the 1921 census for England and Wales is still scheduled for January 2022, as far as we know. And for those of you with Scottish interests, the 1921 census for Scotland might even be available later this year.
