RTFHS member Anne Hughes has sent us this information about an event at St Mary’s Church, Hadlow, near Tonbridge in Kent, on Sunday 17th August 2025.
Anne says: “The church celebrates its 1050th anniversary on August 16th 2025. To mark the occasion Hadlow Historical Society will have a display in the church about the Hartlake Tragedy of October 1853. This was when 30 hop-pickers were drowned in the River Medway, many of them Romany. There is a large memorial to them in the churchyard.
The church will be open on Sunday 17th August 2025 from 1-3pm if anyone wishes to come and see the display and visit the memorial in the churchyard.”
Anne says that if anyone would like to visit the church to see the display on a different day, she may be able to arrange this. Please contact the RTFHS at editor@rtfhs.org.uk in the first instance and we can let you have Anne’s email address.
