The 1939 Register – which is a census-like record of 40 million of the inhabitants of England and Wales on 29 September 1939 – has just been launched by Ancestry.co.uk. Previously the Register was only available on the FindMyPast website.
It’s an important source for family historians looking for ancestors and relatives in the first half of the 20th century. That’s because the 1921 census won’t be released until 2022. The 1931 census was destroyed by enemy action in the Second World War. And no census was held in 1941 due to the War.
