RTFHS baptism/birth index

Looking for the baptism or birth of a travelling ancestor? Perhaps our index can help. We’re currently building up a collection of extracts from parish registers and birth certificates that we’ll add regularly to this page. So please check back soon. And if you have any to share, please contact us.

It’s always best to check the original registers for accuracy as we receive contributions for this list from many different individuals and sources.

To protect the privacy of individuals, we only publish birth and baptism information from before December 1920.

The little bouquet, the 11th and 10th offset from the parent plant, was produced in the lovely valley of Nidderdale, in the gipsy cart, on the road side, close by Pateley Bridge, without the help of man, midwife, or any other exotic aid. Potter’s Electric News, 17 September 1862
“On the 29th ult., at a Gipsy Encampment, near Clegyr Bridge, St David’s, the wife of Richard Lee, the head of the tribe, of a daughter. —–The family of Lee’s [sic] is most extensive, and is said to be one of the oldest and most respected of those abnormal wanderers throughout England. Our readers will, doubtless, remember the account of the interment some five or six months ago, of a very beautiful gipsy girl named Sempronia Lee, in Kirton Churchyard, near Ipswich, when members of the tribe of both sexes attended the ceremony; the females dressed in white muslin, corded with white silk &c., their heads covered with white veils reaching almost to the ground; while the men were dressed with white silk hatbands, tied with white ribbon, and also wore white gloves and neckties. Many hundreds attended the funeral which was conducted with the greatest decorum. Sempronia was a near relative of the above Richard Lee, who is also closely connected with ‘Gipsy Lee’, who during a fit of insanity lately murdered his wife in a travelling cart in the high road, and has now been sent to Fisherton Lunatic Asylum.”
