The Newspaper Library at Colindale, North London, closes its doors to readers for the final time on Friday 8 November 2013.
The complete newspaper collection will then be transferred to Boston Spa for storage and in March 2014 a new Newspaper Reading Room will open at the British Library next to St Pancras Station in London. Here you’ll be able to see a growing number of national, regional and local newspaper titles online – for example, via the British Newspaper Archive site – and in microfilm form.
However, if the newspaper or magazine you want to consult isn’t available in either of those forms (and we suspect that some of the more specialised titles won’t be for many years, including things like “World’s Fair”), then you will need to put in a request to see the original newsprint version. These will take 2 working days to arrive from Boston Spa and will be sent from there if they’re in a fit state to travel . So the message is: be well prepared. And possibly: see if you can find an alternative place to get hold of the newspapers you need.
