Do you have ancestors in Norfolk? You might find them in Find My Past’s latest release of parish register records, launched yesterday. It includes:
• Over ½ million baptisms from 307 new Norfolk parishes
• Over ½ million marriages and banns from 461 new parishes
• 423,000 new burial records from 301 new parishes.
The collection comprises digitised original registers plus transcriptions of them. And the release has revealed a wealth of fresh Romany Gypsy finds, including the baptism of a previously unknown daughter of Ambrose Smith and his wife Elizabeth (Ambrose being the uncle of the Ambrose Smith, born c1804, on whom the Victorian author George Borrow based his famous ‘Jasper Petulengro’ character).
Amaryllis Smith, the daughter of Ambrose and Elizabeth Smith, was baptised on 26 August 1783 at Redenhall with Harleston, Norfolk, described as being born on 19 August 1783 and the father described as ‘a Travelling Tinker’.
