A new website has been launched today by the Imperial War Museum to invite you to contribute information about your own ancestor if he or she served in the First World War.

It’s called the Lives of the First World War project and on the site you’ll currently find a list of the names of the 4.5 million who were in the British Army.

Most only exist as names – which is where you come in. Because if a member of your family is in the list, you can add personal details, such date of birth and death, parents’ names and the work they did before they joined up, plus their photo and family documents.

Eventually the plan is to expand the list to 8 million, to also cover people who were in the Royal Flying Corps/Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy and the Canadian, Australian and New Zealand Forces.

The result will be a digital archive that not only commemorates the part played by your ancestor in WW1 but also preserves their history for future generations.
