We hear that 100,000 new pages have just been added to the free Welsh Newspapers Online website, including a number of new newspaper titles.
These include – as examples – the Haverfordwest and Milford Haven Telegraph plus two titles for the neighbouring English county of Cheshire: the Cheshire Observer and the Cheshire Courant.
It’s clear that the local and regional Welsh newspapers of the past – like their English and Scottish counterparts – didn’t restrict themselves to reporting on what was going on in their own areas. A general search on the terms ‘Gipsy’ and ‘Gypsy’ brings up lots of stories from across the whole of Britain. So it’s worth taking a look even if your own people didn’t live in or travel in Wales, particularly as everything on the site is free to search and free to view.
